Learn about Dr Louise Jane Michaelis’ research on the immune system and microbiome

In celebration of #WorldAllergyWeek, and as the NHS celebrates its 70th Birthday #NHS70, we’re sharing the story of award-winning Dr Louise Michaelis who is working on exciting research, including on the microbiome, studying microorganisms in the human body.

Dr Louise Michaelis is a Consultant and Associate Lecturer in Paediatric Immunology and Allergy at The Great North Children’s Hospital Newcastle upon Tyne. She has previously worked at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Southampton University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she read for her PhD in Immune Tolerance in Early Childhood (ITEC study). She orchestrates clinics with other specialities for atopic dermatitis, IgE and Non IgE-mediated food allergy, allergic asthma, systemic mastocytosis, drug allergy and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. She currently works within a busy Tertiary Paediatric Allergy Service which provides a drug allergy (desensitisation) and immunotherapy (sublingual and subcutaneous) service for children.

Dr Michaelis is currently co-ordinating phase I, II and III MCRN Portfolio clinical trials and has started to evolve and publish a diverse research portfolio focusing on the immune and inflammatory mechanisms of tolerance in multi-system allergy in childhood focusing on mechanistic studies and the microbiome.

In February 2016 she was awarded an “NIHR Leading Principle Investigators Award” for her leadership of a Collaborative International Industry Clinical Trial. In 2017 alongside her clinical and research teams the “NIHR Commercial Industry Team Award” and “The Bright Ideas in Health Award” for the “Honeycomb MoSAIC Model of Seamless Care in paediatric allergy”.

Dr Michaelis also participates in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching forums having written her first book “Total revision – Extended Paediatrics” alongside Dr Ian Maconochie in 2005. She participates in teaching at The Great North Children’s Hospital and lectures as part of Faculty for the Allergy eModule at The University of Newcastle and the Allergy MSc Course at The University of Southampton.
