Statement regarding the death of Ken Matthews

The Anaphylaxis Campaign is saddened to learn of the death of Ken Matthews, 84, who died at Wrexham Maelor Hospital on 2 June 2019.
Consultant pathologist Dr Huyen Abdel Salam told the inquest that Mr Matthews died of an allergic reaction. According to press reports Ken was not known to have any existing allergies and the inquest concludes the cause is unknown.
Joanne Lees, assistant coroner, said: “It is very difficult to know what substance caused it, if indeed it was a substance as opposed to a bite.”
Giving a conclusion of accidental death, she added: “Although he had a heart condition it is unlikely he would have passed away on 2 June had he not had the allergic reaction.”
Chief Executive of the Anaphylaxis Campaign, Lynne Regent, said:
“We are very saddened to learn about the death of Mr Matthews as a result of an unknown allergic reaction and our thoughts are with his family and friends as they process the findings from the inquest into his death.”
