The Anaphylaxis Campaign welcomes the announcement yesterday from Nick Clegg, Lib Dem leader and Deputy PM, that all pupils at infant schools in England are to have the option of free school lunches from next September (www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24132416).

We believe this is very good news for young children and will ensure they all the opportunity to have a hot nutritious meal at lunchtime.  However we recognise the fact that parents of children with severe food allergies may have concerns regarding the potential risk of allergen exposure if their child participates in this plan.

Providers of school meals should have safeguards in place for children with allergies.  However if parents feel they would prefer their child has a packed lunch from home – then they still can.

“The new policy does not ban packed lunches, but the aim is that having the hot, free option, will boost the numbers of pupils having school dinners.”  BBC news story.

We will continue to follow this new policy and update you as new announcements are published.

This is what you have been saying about this announcement on our Facebook page.
